This summer, a herd of beautifully decorated, 2.5m tall giraffe sculptures took to the streets of Colchester in celebration of Colchester Zoo’s 50th anniversary. The giraffes delighted residents and visitors alike and at the end of the event they were auctioned to raise funds for Colchester Zoo’s conservation charity, Action of the Wild.
Action for the Wild has assisted a broad spectrum of conservation projects worldwide and this year has supported 20 projects protecting a range of species from orangutans to vultures, Humboldt penguins to Komodo dragons and elephants to moths.
Colchester Zoo’s Director Anthony Tropeano said: “Stand Tall has been a fantastic spectacle for the people of Colchester and it is our gift to the people of Colchester and the surrounding area for their support over the years. It’s been an excellent way to raise vital funds for our conservation charity Action for the Wild.”
Stand Tall for Giraffes is the culmination of over 12 month’s hard work by Colchester Zoo and Kat Marketing. This event could not have been possible without considerable support from a very impressive list of local companies, who sponsored the troop of giraffes.
We would also like to thank the many artists who have created so many stunning giraffes.
Stand Tall Schools
Over 15,000 children and young people from 77 Essex schools and groups produced some absolutely fantastic designs, which appeared in small herds of sculptures in high profile locations around the county.
The school giraffe sculptures were all entered into a competition, judged by wildlife presenter, Michaela Strachan. Michaela had a tough decision to make but chose, Savannah Hamilton, by Hamilton Primary School as the winner of the Stand Tall schools competition!
